Majority of the Pakistanis believe that the extremist elements are spreading Shia Sunni differences in Pakistan

According to a survey carried out by Institute for Public Opinion Research (IPOR), “51% of the respondents said Shia Sunni conflicts are promoted by some extremist elements in Pakistan.

In a survey of national representative sample of men and women across Pakistan was asked” In your opinion Shia Sunni conflicts in Pakistan are based on real difference or some extremist elements promoting this?” 51% of the overall respondent said “Extremist elements”, while 23% said “Based on real difference” rest of the 26% percentage didn’t answer this question.

Further asked about who these extremist elements are, the top three culprits mentioned were “foreign elements (28%), Taliban (17%) and 13% referring to the “Terrorist Organizations, behind promotion of Shia-Sunni conflicts.

The interviews were conducted by Institute for Public Opinion Research (IPOR) among a sample of 4,134 men and women with urban and rural division of all four province (Punjab, Sindh, KPK, Balochistan). The margin of error is estimated to be approximately ±2% at 95% confidence level. Time period of the study was March 20- April 08, 2015.
